John Singleton Mosby (1833-1916) of Powhatan County, Va., was a lawyer and Confederate officer. Mosby was educated at the University of Virginia and worked as a lawyer in Washington County, Va., prior to the Civil War. In 1861, Mosby enlisted in the 1st Virginia Cavalry.
